Even if you do not wear dental braces, you may know someone who does. Dental braces are devices that straighten and align teeth. They help position teeth with regard to a person’s bite and also improve overall dental health. Dental braces can also fix gaps. Many people get dental braces during their teenage years, but adults can benefit from them too!
Dental braces are of different types and may consist of bands, wires or other fixed or removable corrective appliances. Different dental braces work for different people and there is no one dental brace that works for everyone.
Braces work by applying continuous pressure over a period of time to move teeth in a specific direction. As the teeth move, the bone changes shape as well. However, while dental braces are rather common, there are certain things you need to remember when wearing dental braces. In this article, that’s what we’ll discuss.
1)Eat the right foods:
If you watch what you eat you can enhance your overall oral health, especially when wearing dental braces. You should eat a balanced diet that is low in sugary foods to minimize plaque or stains on and around your teeth. If you eat something sugary you should brush your teeth when you’re done. You should preferably eat lean proteins, fruits, vegetables, and legumes. You should avoid sticky and chewy foods, such as dried fruits, caramel, and toffee, as all of these can become stuck to your braces and are difficult to remove from your braces. Also avoid hard foods such as nuts, ice, and popcorn, as these can break the wires of the braces and loosen the brackets. If you want to eat crunchy foods, cut them into small, bite-size pieces. This even includes otherwise healthy foods such as raw apples and carrots.
2)Take good dental care and clean your braces regularly:
You need to clean your braces regularly, whether you are wearing Invisalign or standard braces. Any food that is trapped between your teeth and braces can have severe consequences. You should clean each tooth using toothpaste and a soft, bristle brush. You should use a mirror to take a close look at each tooth to ensure you have cleaned it thoroughly. You can also use a gentle mouthwash for additional protection. If while cleaning, you experience any loosening, pain, or damage to your braces you should visit your orthodontist immediately.
3)Brush and floss daily:
You need to brush and floss your teeth regularly, because if you do not do so, you will have tooth decay under your brackets. This can lead to several other health issues, including plaque build-up and gum disease. You should brush and floss when you wake up, after you eat, and before you go to bed. There are special toothbrushes available for cleaning teeth with braces and you should get one of those. If you brush and floss regularly, your teeth will feel a lot cleaner and fresher and you won’t have to worry about food particles being stuck between your teeth, causing dental hygiene problems. If you have questions regarding cleaning your teeth and gums while having braces, you should consult your orthodontist.
4)Do not grind your teeth:
You can damage your teeth and braces if you clench or grind your teeth. Grinding your teeth causes increased sensitivity and can damage your teeth or braces. You should also avoid biting your nails, opening bottles with your teeth, or holding things in your mouth. If you do grind your teeth, ask your orthodontist whether you can wear a mouth guard.
5)Visit your dentist and orthodontist regularly:
You should visit your dentist for regular cleanings and check-ups. Visit your dentist at least twice a year and your orthodontist as often as is needed. Investing in the regular care of your teeth and braces can help you maintain good, overall dental health.
